Abstract : Crystal structure analysis of hailstones may result, when used alone, in ambiguous conclusions about growth conditions of the hailstones. Therefore, size and distribution patterns of air bubbles, and radial concentration of soluble and insoluble contaminants have also been investigated. Kidder and Carte (1964), on the basis of analysis of artificial hailstones, indicate that more than one mechanism may be responsible for formation of air inclusions in accreted ice, either in ring-like patterns or in radial lines. This note presents a new technique for investigating those features with high resolution. It is based on the different x-ray absorption coefficients of air and high density materials relative to ice.
