Abstract : The combined use of electron spin resonance spectroscopy and polarized exciting optical radiation to study the spectra of excited triplet electronic states of molecules dissolved in rigid glasses has been named magnetophotoselection (MPS). This paper discusses the quantification of this technique and describes the equations for obtaining quantitative results. The emphasis is on determining the polarization of exciting singlet - singlet transitions; however, the model described is general and can be extended to other studies. Effects due to depopulation of the ground state molecules and to triplet - triplet absorption are explicitly considered. The results of computer-simulated MPS experiments are given for several representative cases. Finally, rules are given for maximizing the accuracy of a MPS experiment. (Author)
