Abstract : Creep experiments under changing load conditions were carried out on commercial 1100 aluminium (type 1100). It was found that if during primary creep the load is abruptly reduced by 10 percent, creep virtually ceases for some time after which it starts again at a lower strain rate. The period for which the strain rate is negligible is called the delay time and it is a function of strain rate at the instant of load reduction and of the test temperature. The results fit an empirical equation: epsilon delta t = C(T). It is proposed that the magnitude of the delay time is related to the time necessary for the relaxation of the back stress which stems from stress fields arising from all dislocations near the mobile dislocations.
