Abstract : The properties of trinitroresorcinol (styphnic acid) of interest for the establishment of quality assurance requirements were investigated. The following characteristics of samples obtained from 5 different sources were studied; appearance, moisture by oven drying at 68C and by desiccation over concentrated sulfuric acid, hygroscopicity assay by titration of nitro groups and by titration with standard alkali, melting point, stability as determined by the 100C stability test and 120C vacuum stability test, loss on ignition, water-insoluble matter, alcohol-insoluble matter, sulfate, apparent density, and granulation. There are two types of trinitroresorcinol produced commercially: a yellow 'pure' variety and a reddish-brown 'impure' variety. This necessitates the establishment of two classes for specification purposes. It would seem advisable to include requirements for the following in a specification: moisture, assay by titration of nitro groups, assay by titration with standard alkali, melting point, residue on ignition, water-insoluble matter, alcohol-insoluble matter, sulfate and granulation.
