Abstract : The use of polarization agility to reduce radar tracking errors was investigated by means of an experimental program using a polarization agile pulse Doppler conical scan radar and an optical tracking system for reference alignment. Tests were conducted against ground and airborne targets using both linear polarization and polarization agility. The tracking error signals were recorded and analyzed to determine if polarization agility improved the radar tracking performance. The results showed that the radar tracking performance was sensitive to both polarization switching rate and switching increment. Improvement in tracking performance was obtained for high switching rates compared to the conical scan rate, and for small angular switching increments. (Author)
