Abstract : Stress intensity factor for a straight crack in an idealized stringer reinforced panel subjected to uniaxial tension is determined by the use of finite element analysis. Crack opening displacements which are obtained directly by the direct stiffness method are used to compute the stress intensity factor. The influence of a rivet hole which is ahead of an advancing crack, on the stress intensity factor is studied for three ratios of stringer rigidity to panel rigidity. Also discussed are the changes in stress intensity factors and strain energy release rates as the crack penetrates through the rivet hole and reappears on the other side of the hole. An energy release criterion is proposed for estimating the arrest capability of the rivet hole. (Author)
