Abstract : Fluctuation noise may cause errors in the reception of phase-shift-keyed signals. The effect of noise level and clipping threshold (at the phase-detector output) on the probability of such errors is theoretically investigated. It is assumed that an additive Gaussian narrow-band noise is present at the IF-amplifier output. Formulas are derived for probabilities of spurious symbol, reversed (positive instead of negative or vice versa) symbol, and missing symbol. From these formulas, curves are plotted which show the above probabilities as functions of the signal-to-noise ratio and clipping threshold. The results are intended for designing phase-shift keying systems with erasing channel.
