Abstract : Using Al2O3 as the study material, an evaluation of the fusion casting process for structural ceramic materials was conducted. The investigation into the improvement of structural soundness in castings of high alumina compositions included a study of furnace and mold design, melt conditions, chemical additions, vibrational casting, and heat extraction. Evaluation was made by microscopic observations, mechanical damping capacity measurements and strength testing. Structurally sound fused-cast alumina resulted from utilization of the most suitable system of process controls and furnace design in conjunction with optimum grain refinement and intergranular bonding, development of metastable solid solutions and strengthening by precipitation of solute rich phases.
