Abstract : A plasma torch having very high gas enthalpy and low contamination was developed for growing single crystals of very refractory materials. The torch consisted of a wall-stabilized, constricted-arc, nitrogen-plasma jet using 20-50 kilowatts of d-c power. A flow of purge gas prevented the vaporized tungsten electrode material from contaminating the plasma stream. The crystal-growing experiments used a muffle of sintered magnesium oxide and a Verneuil feed system. MgO seed crystals could be made to grow a few millimeters in height in several minutes' time when the conditions were just right. (Author)
