Abstract : One of the basic characteristics of oscillatory systems is the value of losses of oscillatory energy, determined by the speed of drop of oscillations with the stepwise turning off of exciting force. The measure of these losses in a system with one degree of freedom is usually the logarithmic damping decrement, the time constant of damping, and the Q-factor; in a system with many degree of freedom it is the time of reverberation, drop in level per unit of time and others. One of the simplest methods of determination of any of these values, interconnected at low losses by simple relationships, is determination of the time of assigned damping of the oscillatory process or decrease in its intensity for a fixed interval of time. In connection with this an instrument was developed allowing on the screen of the oscillograph with afterglow of the tube observing the process of damping of oscillations in a logarithmic scale of time and from the image directly determining the mean time constant of the envelope of the oscillatory process.
