Abstract : Two electronic stethoscopes were designed for use with litter and ambulatory patients on domestic and overseas aeromedical evacuation flights. The first, a frequency-translating stethoscope, utilizes both a frequency shift of the Korotkoff sounds and the elimination of all acoustic coupling. The second stethoscope, a direct electronic device, eliminates all acoustic coupling. Evaluation in high-noise environments and under actual flight conditions has demonstrated that the instruments are reliable and practicle. The stethoscopes are useful in any noisy area where it is necessary to obtain heart sounds or indirect measurements of blood pressure. (Author)
