Abstract : During the action of a laser pulse on gray cast iron the following specific effects appear: the liquid phase on the metal surface shrinks into individual drops; the front of the melted zone makes wedgelike penetrations into the depth of the metal along the graphite lamella; gas is liberated from the graphite lamella, forming cavities in the melted zone. When a laser pulse acts on white cast iron a specific affect is observed, consisting of precipitation of a disperse ferrous phase in the cementite; as a result the microhardness of the comentite and its etchability by reagents are increased. The perlite structural component in gray and white cast iron undergoes basically the same transformations as arise under the action of a laser on carbon steel. (Author)
