Abstract : Addition of heat upstream of the thickness maximum of bodies with sharp leading edges or pointed noses increases wave drag in supersonic flow, as is generally known. Experimental results show that this statement is not true for blunt bodies with and without central spike. Ejecting hydrogen from the spike or the body nose and burning it near the boundary between the subsonic and supersonic nose flow region reduces the drag considerably and influences the shock structure. Theoretical interpretations of the phenomenon are linked to the complex field of flow separation and reattachment. (Author)
