Abstract : The oxidation resistance of six commercial aluminide coatings on the superalloys 713C and IN100 has been examined under cyclic oxidation conditions. Four oxidation-resistant coatings and two sulphidation-resistant coatings were investigated. Coated specimens were alternately exposed to an oxidizing furnace atmosphere at 2000F (1093C) for two hours and then cooled to approximately 150F (65C) for one-half hour. Specimen weight changes, and changes in specimen surface appearance, were recorded at regular intervals. Specimens were tested until either catastrophic failure occurred or 2000 hours had elapsed. The oxidation resistance afforded each alloy by each of the coatings examined was greater for 713C alloy than for IN100 alloy. In general the oxidation-resistant coatings provided adequate protection for 713C, while one sulphidation-resistant coating provided a more satisfactory protection than any of the others. IN100 alloy was not protected adequately at 2000F (1093C) by any of the oxidation-resistant coatings examined. One sulphidation resistant coating provided a limited degree of acceptable protection. Coatings on IN100 deteriorated by for formation of localized surface growths. These growths appear to be caused by the preferential oxidation of coated primary gamma' phase particles. (Author)
