Abstract : Model III of the Army Heart Monitor is an electronic device that accepts the electrocardiogram and makes distinctive indications when cardiac standstill or ventricular fibrillation occurs. This model differentiates ventricular fibrillation from the other myocardial waveforms on the basis of frequency spectrum, duty cycle (a parameter related to the area under the curve), and spectrum-limited signal average value. Laboratory and clinical tests have shown these parameters to be useful in sensing fibrillation and to give improved fibrillation-sensing accuracy over the system used in Model II. Nevertheless, false fibrillation indications by Model III have shown the need for improvements. Model III essentially meets or exceeds its design requirements, but additional requirements imposed by medical advisors as well as the recommendations generated by tests have shown the need for Model IV.
