Abstract : Complex reflection and transmission coefficients are determined by computer for symmetrically nonuniform plasma layers. The electron densities vary within the layers according to 1 - x to the 8th power, 1 - x to the 4th power, and 1 - x squared for -1 < x < +1 at constant collision frequency. Infinite slabs and nonuniform layers in a waveguide are considered. Graphs of the complex reflection and transmission coefficients and of the changes caused by the nonuniformities are shown in terms of normalized plasma parameters. The method of computation, the computer program, and the diagrams are useful in plasma diagnostics and communications. In diagnostics, probing waves are transmitted through a nonuniform plasma layer between horn antennas or in a waveguide test section. In communications, waves are transmitted through plasma layers in front of a horn antenna. (Author)
