Abstract : The project was concerned with the study of the quantitative aspects of the neural activity in primary afferent nerve fibers from the vestibular organ, recorded with microelectrodes at the entry of the vestibular nerve into the brain stem; and with the characterization of the activity of individual second-order neurons in the vestibular nuclear complex. The emphasis was, firstly, on the determination of the quantitative relation between measures of single unit activity and precisely monitored position of the animal preparation in the gravitational field; and secondly, on the acquisition of these data in animal preparations which are not subjected to general anesthesia, and with the central nervous system entirely intact.
