Abstract : Facilities that were developed by the Office of Civil Defense for the production of synthetic fallout are described. The broad capability is exemplified by reporting (1) a large multi-ton production run, and (2) a small routine batch of 500 grams is produced each month. The long term leaching of Cs-134 from synthetic fallout is described by two mechanisms: initial leaching, which is controlled by a sorption reaction, and later leaching, which is controlled by a diffusion process. Fission product radionuclides from 12-year-old SHASTA fallout were found to be from 1 to 5 percent available as measured by 615 days of leaching. (Author)
