Abstract : The study was undertaken to develop and evaluate low-density materials for use in buoyancy applications at ocean depths to 10,000 ft. The study included a survey of commercial products and evaluation of composite materials and chemically foamed plastics. Description of the various materials is presented together with experimental data on their characteristics and behavior under hydrostatic loading. Recommendations are made for improving the strength versus density characteristics of the most promising materials. (Author)
