Abstract : The anodic oxidation of propane at a platinum electrode in 2F CF3COOH at 65C has been studied using an impedance technique. In this the response of the system to a potential controlled a.c. signal over the frequency range 10 Hz to 100 kHz was determined and related to an equivalent electric circuit which could be derived from a consideration of various possible mechanisms for the electrode reaction. Emphasis was placed upon the actual derivation of equivalent circuits and their relation to a specific physical process. The results show that, for the conditions of this study, the double layer capacitance could be evaluated in the presence of propane, and that adsorption is the predominant process in the initial stages of hydrocarbon oxidation.
