Abstract : The report deals with the propagation of plane electromagnetic waves in a compressible plasma which is thought to be unbounded and subject to a drift velocity and a magnetic field both constant with respect to space and time. An investigation of the plasma's continuity conditions at boundary surfaces shows that eight field amplitudes can be prescribed. In accordance with this a dispersion equation of eighth order is derived from a linear, homogeneous system of equations for the current density in the plasma. If the direction of the drift velocity and the direction of the magnetic field are parallel to the direction of propagation, one finds two modes travelling as longitudinal waves and six modes propagating as transverse waves. For certain conditions there are waves whose amplitudes decrease or increase exponentially along the direction of propagation. (Author)
