Abstract : The research described in this report had two principal long-range goals. The effort was directed toward gaining a sufficient background of knowledge which would lead to increases in the Curie temperatures and in the mobilities of the chromium chalcogenide spinel type of ferromagnetic semiconductors. The first goal was pursued through attempts to understand the nature of the magnetic exchange interactions and through the synthesis of many more compounds of the chalcogenide spinel type. Increases in the mobility were sought through first understanding the nature of the defects and nonstoichiometry in chromium containing chalcogenide material. Nonstoichiometry has been shown to be a significant factor in the determination of the magnetic and electrical properties of the chromium chalcogenide spinels. The nature of the exchange interactions in chromium containing chalcogenide spinels was examined in some detail. The exchange interactions of the chromium chalcogenide spinels, furthermore, have been related to the hyperfine parameters of nuclear magnetic resonance. A large number of new materials were synthesized in attempts to find semiconducting ferromagnetic compounds with Curie points higher than CdCr2Se4 (130 degrees K).
