Abstract : A summary of the design study conducted for construction of a water tunnel and instrumentation system suitable for investigations of turbulent non-Newtonian flat plate boundary layers is presented. The tunnel characteristics are evaluated and data obtained with a laser-velocimeter is compared to that generated with pitot tubes. A theoretical correlation between drag coefficients and appropriately defined non-Newtonian Reynolds numbers is developed in a manner analogous to a Newtonian analysis by Prandtl. Velocity profiles measured by laser velocimeter for power law turbulent boundary layer were obtained and used to determine drag coefficients which were compared with theoretical predictions. Reasonably good correlation was obtained. (Author)
