Abstract : Infusion of stroma free hemoglobin solution into cynomolgus monkeys produced no adverse effects on renal function or architecture even with prior stress in the form of dehydration, phlebotomy, or both. A transient fall in CPAH was noted in some animals. Urinary hemoglobin excretion was large in animals (30% of injected dose in 4 hr) and urinary concentration reached 10 to 20 g/100 ml when urine flow was low because of dehydration. The rapid urinary hemoglobin excretion in part accounts for the short plasma half disappearance time of about 120 min. No severe activation of blood coagulation was documented. These observations suggest stroma free hemoglobin should have further consideration as a resuscitation fluid. (Author)
