Abstract : A sheet of textured titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V was examined after various solution treatments to ascertain the effect of heat treatment upon texturing, microstructure, and mechanical properties. Specimens were solution treated between 1400 and 1800 F for 1/4 hour, water quenched, then aged at 1000 F for four hours and air cooled. Examination revealed that the texture-strengthening characteristics evident in the as-received condition did not increase in the treated materials and at 1800 F all indications revealed complete removal of the texture inherent in the starting material. However, an increase in the uniaxial strength level with little or no loss of (R) texture strengthening was observed in material treated between 1400 and 1700 F. Plots of the mechanical properties obtained versus solution temperature and corresponding photomicrographs of each material condition are illustrated along with the corresponding (0002) pole figures. The resultant mechanical properties are compared and analyzed with the corresponding microstructures and textures. (Author)
