Abstract : Energy transfer reactions of electronically excited atomic and diatomic species were studied. The excited species were created by vacuum ultraviolet irradiation of simple molecules, with image-tube spectrographs and filtered photomultipliers being utilized to detect and monitor emission features. Quantum yields for excited states were deduced from absolute intensity measurements. A pulsed photolysis-signal integration system was used to determine absolute rate coefficients for energy transfer reactions of O(singlet S), N2(A triplet Sigma(u)(+), and N(doublet D). O(singlet D) and CO(A singlet Pi) were also studied. Resonance fluorescence scattering was used to measure O(triplet P), CO(X singlet Sigma(+)), and NO(X doublet Pi(r)). (Author)
