Abstract : Some high-speed cameras, including streak cameras, contain mirror prisms which are brought to rotate at an extremely high speed in order to register very rapid movements of the photographed object. In order that these vital components may be optimally dimensioned, a knowledge is required of stresses and deformations arising in the rotation. The state of stress has been earlier analyzed by other authors under given assumptions, for prisms with triangular cross section, among others, whereas no account has been taken of the state of deformation for such prisms. The present study builds further on an analysis of this kind. From the stress equations which are essential for assessing the strength, expressions are derived also, under rather more general assumptions, for deformations relevant for evaluation of the image distortion generated by them. Numerical values both of stresses and deformations for some different cases have been calculated with an IBM 7090 computer. From these values a study can be made of the dependence of stresses and deformations on the choice of material for and geometry of the prism. (Author)
