Abstract : The invention involves a four-ball friction machine used for determining the antiwear properties of lubricating oils. The machine consists of a spindle with a chuck in which the upper ball is pressed onto a cup holding the three other balls and the test oil. Added to this is a system for axial loading on the balls and an electric heater for heating the oil. This machine can maintain prolonged static loads on the balls at high sliding speeds and in the presence of various forces.
