Abstract : This test method shows that thin composite laminates can be accurately and readily tested in shear for their stress-strain characteristics in the plane of their laminations. The method is a procedure using a modified picture frame called the 'rail shear test.' The shear distortion is measured by a detrusion gage located midway between rails and midway along the 5-inch dimension. The size of the apparatus and the nature of the detrusion gage are convenient for automatically evaluating composites in abnormal environments. (Author, modified-PL)
