Abstract : Campbell and Counter measured 'thresholds' for various short durations of low-frequency sinusoidal signals. The adaptive psychophysical procedure they used is shown to yield uninterpretable results; values they report can represent a wide range of performance levels. In this note, we take Campbell's and Counter's study as example of the methodological traps in seemingly straightforward testing methods. (Author)
