Abstract : A fault occasionally encountered in digital systems occurs when a pulse is intermittently suppressed or missing in a long train of pulses. Pulses are often transmitted along parallel channels and may be coincident, as in the case of the readout from a digital tape recorder, or interleaved in time, as in some control circuits. If one of the channels degrades to a marginal condition where one in 100 or more pulses is suppressed, it may be difficult to ascertain when and where the pulse disappeared. The report describes an RTL logic circuit which indicates when one or more pulses in either one of two, but not both, parallel channels is missing and can be used to overcome this shortcoming.
