Abstract : Field emission techniques was applied to the investigation of clean metal surfaces. In particular, the pulsed field emission microscope was used to study (1) surface migration of metal atoms over their own substrate, (2) screw dislocations, and (3) changes in emitter shape due to simultaneous application of high temperature and high electric field. Also the field ion microscope was used to investigate the atomic detail of a metal surface. Possible application of field emission to useful electronic devices was investigated in two areas: (1) the development of low voltage tubes using field emission cathodes, and (2) stabilization of field emission cathodes by high current density.
