Abstract : The program of research was directed at studying the bombardment of the polar atmosphere by radiations accompanying solar and magnetic disturbances. The program was based on using radiation detectors on balloon-borne platforms and measuring the fluxes, spectra, time variations and geophysical associations of the incoming radiation. The radiation encountered at high latitudes consisted of protons, accelerated at the sun and propagated through interplanetary space to the earth, and electrons, accelerated within the magnetosphere of the earth and guided to high latitudes by the geomagnetic field.
