Abstract : A new type of TV camera, the SECON, was developed, which combines features of both the image orthicon and the vidicon in its operation. In the secon (abbreviation for SEC-vidicon; SEC stands for 'secondary-electron conductivity') the photoelectrons of the secondary-electron conductivity of the target is used. The target stores and preamplifies the charge image before it is commuted by the reading beam. This camera is the result of studying the properties of certain dielectrics. The signal is taken off the load resistor of the signal plate. Secons use both magnetic and electrostatic deflection and focusing, and quite often there are 'mixed' types, i.e., a camera with electrostatic focusing and magnetic deflection. Certain secons can out-perform both image orthicons and vidicons, but because of their low specific sensitivity they cannot completely replace high-sensitivity image orthicons, and because of their large size and working voltages they cannot completely replace vidicons. Many examples of secons which work in the visible, ultraviolet and other spectral regions are given. (Author)
