Abstract : Study of the solidification of trinitrotoluene (TNT) by differential enthalpy has already shown that TNT can exist as a glass if molten material is sufficiently undercooled. In this note, observations with a differential scanning calorimeter extend this study and indicate polymorphic or polytypic behaviour near the melting point. Samples of 2,4,6-TNT of high purity yield calorimeter traces whose shape is dependent on the method of their preparation. Differences are also observed in X-ray powder patterns of the specimens.
