Abstract : Electronic Raman scattering to crystal field levels of the doublet F(7/2) manifold of a single crystal of ytterbium in yttrium gallium garnet placed in magnetic fields up to 48 kG has been observed. The electronic levels of one of the crystal field states has been found to be extremely sensitive to the effect of the external field which is at least to a first approximation in agreement with a crystal field analysis.
