Abstract : Shipboard measurements of atmospheric potential gradient are discussed. A comparison is made at sea between the performance of a potential-measuring apparatus and a field mill. The design of electrometer input multistage voltage followers is presented as a solution to the degradation of insulators by the salt environment. A model is given which calculates from the ship's engine power and the relative wind vector the potential gradient due to the charged stack gas. A method is also described by which a reduction factor can be calculated so that the geometric distortion of a ship's superstructure is accounted for in potential-gradient measurements. (Author)
