Abstract : A program of analysis and interpretation of radiometrically calibrated photographs of chemical releases designed to probe the upper atmosphere is described. Slitless spectra of the early phases of explosive barium releases, made with a high-sensitivity secondary electron conduction vidicon system, were reduced by microdensitometry of the video output display. Precision photographic photometry of a series of AlO clouds were used in a search for high-altitude gravity waves. Time exposures were re-photographed in cine mode for improved visualization of the development and transport of luminous clouds. The procedure by which the data stored on the films are reduced and analyzed is carefully reviewed, and a larger scanning aperture with a much smaller number of sampling points is recommended.
