Abstract : The electron emission from solids under the influence of laser radiation was investigated in a systematic way. This was accomplished by studying both metals and insulators in the form of evaporated films and single crystals, using three different laser radiations and measuring not only the intensity dependence of the electron emission but also the energy distribution of the emitted electrons. The electron emission from the solids studied can be explained in terms of two fundamentally different effects: (1) thermionic effect and (2) many-photon photoelectric effects. (Author)
