Abstract : At time t = 0, the exchange of mass and energy between a liquid droplet and its 'hot' gaseous environment begins. This atmosphere is assumed to possess a constant thermodynamic state and to be at rest with respect to the droplet in t < 0. The vapor of the liquid reacts with the component 'oxygen' of the atmosphere in a combustion front. Spherically symmetric binary mixtures are assumed on both sides of this front. By use of a new lemma of Nagumo-Westphal-type, which is required by the combustion front and derived in the paper, a closed-form upper bound is determined for the rate of mass loss of the droplet. Here, a few terms have been neglected in the differential equations of the problem; also, the dependency of the specific heats and the transport properties of the atmosphere on the thermodynamic state is subjected to restrictions.
