Abstract : Bands of intense shear may be formed during the penetration of aluminum alloys by projectiles. It is shown that the formation of these bands lowers the ability of the material to withstand further projectile penetration. The structure of these bands has been investigated by electron microscopy and the results obtained indicate that melting occurs within the bands. A simple model of a propagating shear band predicts that the material within the band will melt. (Author)
