Abstract : The initial stages of carburization of hot tungsten by cold methane and cyclopropane was studied by LEED, X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Under these conditions, the rate of hydrocarbon decomposition is dominated by the thermal accommodation: the transfer of energy from the hot surface to the cold reactant. This process in turn is found to be very sensitive to the state of the surface on wires, foils and oriented single crystals. Surface coincidence lattices are shown for the first time to offer poor thermal accommodation, and the resulting passivity is attributed to the smoothness of these surfaces on an atomic scale.
