Abstract : Based on estimates of the components of the thermal balance of the sea surface, an expression is derived relating the magnitude of the negative temperature gradients in the water near the surface (Tp -TH) with the drop in temperature of the water-air surface. The profile of the thermal conductivity coefficient lambda in the upper 2-cm layer of water is given. The results of computing lambda with various wind speeds are given. Using measured data on (Tp -TH), ocean surface evaporation is computed from the known heat exchange in the surface layer. (Author)
