Abstract : The report reviews the capabilities of general purpose and special purpose computers used for solving (missile) flight problems. Based on the nature of the calculated results and the relative time for executing the problems, the application of computers fall into three basic groups: scientific and technical problems in designing, problems in preparing data for the launching of rockets, problems of combat deployment of rocket complexes. A block diagram of a digital electronic computer is included to show the six basic units, and the functions of each unit are elaborated. The sequence (five basic stages) in problem solving are expounded. In solving problems of flight using numerical integration, the Krylov method is described, and a number of special interpolating functions are listed for use in numerical integration; these include those of Newton, Gauss, Bessel, Sterling and Lagrange. The last section of the article deals with the possibilities and designs of electronic analog computers, and the preparation of problems of the flight of rockets using electronic simulation.
