Abstract : The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate that a program of research to carry group-theoretic analysis of conjugacy classes over to the 'fine structure' of the Grzegorczyk hierarchy cannot be carried out. This is established by the exhibition of two primitive recursive permutations which are conjugate, and yet their conjugating element is not primitive recursive. (Author)
