Abstract : A doubly curved element for a shell of revolution which has arbitrarily curved meridians is developed and analyzed. Meridional curvature is calculated using a highly accurate polynomial approximation. The displacement functions selected satisfy interelement compatibility and contain all the lower modes of a complete set of straining functions. Non-straining modes corresponding to rigid body motions are introduced into the final stiffness matrix for any conceivable rigid body motions. The direct stiffness method was used to construct a stress and strain analysis program and the results of the analysis of a few problems are compared to classical solutions to establish the integrity of the element.
