Abstract : The digital data storage requirements for various methods of generating a vocabulary of spoken messages from stored digital data were compared for pulse-code modulation (PCM), variable-slope delta modulation (VSD), a channel vocoder synthesizer, and a compound storage scheme involving the use of the vocoder synthesizer in conjunction with a stored table of spectrum pattern events. The communications concept involves transmitting a digital number to designate a particular message (word, phrase, or sentence) from a fixed repertoire. At the receiving station the message number retrieves stored digital data from a memory device to generate the spoken message. While the channel vocoder permits much greater economy in data storage than the use of PCM or VSD, the compound storage arrangement using an auxiliary digital store of spectrum pattern data provides significant additional economy in data storage.
