Abstract : Elastic eccentrically loaded members buckle by a combination of twisting and bending about their weak axis. By the finite element method any end conditions are readily incorporated into the solution. The critical loads can be determined of eccentrically loaded columns of a plate girder type, as well as the critical loads of stiffened or unstiffened plates subjected to varying membrane stresses. The basic tools of the solution are two elements developed herein, namely a quadrilateral plate element subjected to linearly varying membrane stresses for the webs, and an element of a prismatic member subjected to a linearly varying axial force for the flanges and the stiffeners. Complete polynomials are used for the definition of the displacement field. Consequently the solution leads to an upper bound of the critical load with an assured convergence. The same elements can be used for the determination of the critical loads associated with the lateral buckling of beams, which are subjected to the loads in the plane of the web. This class of problems is also discussed. (Author)
