Abstract : A technique is described that permits the determination of the acoustic scattering strength of the ocean volume in terms of depth, frequency, and time. A pod of charges is lowered together with a hydrophone to various depths in the ocean and, by observing the amount of scattered energy produced by detonating units of the explosive sharge pod, a profile of good resolution of the scattering strength versus depths obtained. The broad-band acoustic characteristics of the charges permit the spectral characteristics of the scattered returns to be determined. Observations made over an extended time period yield the time dependence of scattering. Measurements made in the northeast Pacific Ocean are given. (Author)
