Abstract : A technique is presented whereby measurements of compressional and shear wave velocities and attenuations can be measured over a pressure range from 1 bar to 15 kilobars and over a temperature range from 25 to 1300 degrees Celsius. Compressional wave measurements were made on a basalt, and obsidian, and a limestone. The consistent finding is that the compressional Q decreases markedly in the melting temperature region.
